It’s Just a Pile of Rocks!
IT’s JUST A PILE OF ROCKS! Oh, no! It is so much more! Reading JOSHUA 4:1-9 and the story of how God had parted the waters of the Jordan, and Israel had walked across it into the land of Canaan, on DRY ground!
Joshua had instructed 12 men - one from every tribe of Israel, to march ahead of the Ark of the Covenant (where the presence of the Lord dwelled) and for each one to stop and pick up a stone out of the middle of the river, to carry it on his shoulder across to the place to where Joshua would instruct them! They did- and Joshua made a monument as a memorial forever, to remember how God miraculously rolled back the waters of the Jordan so that Israel could walk across it ON DRY GROUND! Joshua 4:6 - “That this may be a memorial, a sign unto the children of Israel forever”.

God knew that the following generations would ask, “What are these stones?” And when they asked, the answers would bring glory to the God who had brought them through! This was a day of rememberance how, that with Egyptian army behind them, ready to destroy them, Jehovah God had miraculously parted the waters, and they had walked thru on dry ground! This would bring glory and praise from generations that would follow them! There- a Memorial- 12 rocks!
What if a child had asked, “ What is this Memorial?” And the parents had said, “oh, that’s just an old pile of rocks! Let’s move around them”. The children would never have known about the divine Love, the deliverance, the saving of their lives, the God of Israel! It was NOT just a pile of rocks! It was a divine symbol! It would give them faith to believe God for their needs! It would show them to follow a real God, and not the idol gods of this world, their good times, their fame and their riches, which perish.
What is your answer to your children? Your friends? Your neighbors, those you come in contact with? What are you telling them? Is there a Memorial that you are skirting around? No testimony of what God has done for you and yours? How He brought you through? Oh, it’s just a pile of rocks! This is the day to give Him the glory He deserves! He is the One that brought you through! Return to Him! It’s a MEMORIAL of His Love, His Mercy, His Grace! It is NOT just a pile of rocks!
