What is Sages?

What Is SAGES? A Clear Vision for a Powerful Ministry

I’ve written this article with one goal in mind: to clearly explain what SAGES is and why it matters. Many pastors and ministry leaders have asked, “What is SAGES?”—and the answer reveals a powerful, often overlooked opportunity within the local church.

The Meaning Behind SAGES

SAGES stands for Senior Adults Giving Evangelistic Support.

At its core, SAGES is a ministry designed specifically for senior adults—those who are still actively serving, as well as those who may be finding their way back into ministry involvement. It embraces a simple but profound truth once expressed by Terry Shock:

“It’s not retirement—it’s repositioning.”

SAGES recognizes that senior adults are not stepping away from purpose—they are stepping into a new season of impact.

A Ministry Built from the Ground Up

For SAGES to truly thrive, it must function from the local church level upward.

While there may be national structure and leadership, the real strength of SAGES comes through:

  • Local church involvement

  • Sectional leadership support

  • District-level vision and participation

When district superintendents and boards embrace the vision, SAGES can expand into a dynamic, life-giving ministry that reaches both the church and the community.

Why SAGES Matters

In most churches, we naturally prioritize ministries for:

  • Children

  • Youth

  • Young adults

  • Married couples

  • Singles

But here’s the honest question:

Why wouldn’t we intentionally minister to senior adults as well?

They are not a shrinking group—they are a growing, experienced, and spiritually rich segment of the church with tremendous potential for influence.

Think of It Like a Youth Department—For Seniors

One of the simplest ways to understand SAGES is this:

Imagine your church’s youth department—but for those 55 and older.

What does a youth ministry do?

  • Builds connection through fellowship

  • Creates opportunities for participation

  • Develops people through involvement in music, speaking, and service

SAGES follows that same model—just with a different (and highly valuable) age group.

What Can SAGES Look Like in Your Church?

Starting a SAGES ministry doesn’t require complexity—it requires intentionality.

Consider hosting a monthly SAGES service, perhaps on an off night. These gatherings could include:

  • Classic choruses and beloved hymns

  • Testimonies and personal stories

  • Announcements and fellowship

  • A focused, meaningful 20-minute devotional

By appointing a local SAGES director, you create structure and momentum that can energize your congregation in unexpected ways.

An Untapped Opportunity for Growth

Many churches are sitting on a largely untapped resource—their senior adults.

When given a place to serve, connect, and contribute:

  • They re-engage with purpose

  • They strengthen the spiritual culture of the church

  • They often become a bridge for reaching others

Don’t be surprised if this ministry becomes a source of new growth and renewed vitality in your church.

Final Thought: Every Soul Counts

SAGES is more than a program—it’s a recognition of value.

It affirms that every stage of life matters in the Kingdom of God. And when senior adults are empowered to give evangelistic support, the entire church becomes stronger.

Because at the end of the day:

Every soul counts.
