Prayer for the Aged

This blog is written by Mark Morris.

Our community of believers often place a lot of energy and resources on establishing our children and our young people. I agree this is an important investment into our future. It is amazing how fast any area of our belief system can change when one generation lets it slip.

With this in mind, I am not against any investment or activity for our future generation. I have always supported both financially and with energies for them to become all they can for the kingdom of God.

However, as I grow into the time of my life, we call the sage age, it is important for us to understand we must have prayer so we may finish strong and as the apostle said finish our course.

When Paul was in a Roman jail, he wrote a letter to a friend that lived in the city of Colossae. His name was Philemon. He wrote this letter, asking him to restore the slave Onesimus, who had stolen money and ran away and ended up in Rome. During his pleading with Philemon to restore Onesimus, Paul asked for prayers. Prayers that he would be allowed to come visit him and Colossae soon. Historians believe Paul was in his early 60s at the time of this writing.

Paul, the greatest preacher and a great apostle needed prayers so God would use him to strengthen the church as well as fulfill his calling.

In verse nine of this small book, Paul identifies himself as Paul the aged. He could have identified himself as Paul, the world traveler or as a missionary. He may even identified himself as the apostle to the Gentiles or maybe he could’ve called himself the chosen vessel.

But he chose to identify as the aged showing the world, the gray hair he had gotten during his period of labor.

Why would a man of Paul’s spiritual statue need prayer? No doubt it was for the same reason we need prayer today. No matter what we may have accomplished for the kingdom we still need each other’s prayers.

We need prayer at this age because everyone of us are exposed to many dangers and temptations. As the aged, our dangers and temptations are different from the young people, but they are still very real. We need prayer because we still have responsibilities to the kingdom of God. There are many instructions in God‘s word on how we as the aged men and women are to live . It’s important that we fulfill our responsibilities of how we are to live so the younger man and women will know how.

If we stop worshiping in our traditional way, how will the next generation learn. We need prayers because our liberty to preach and teach can be stopped or destroyed by evil men.

We need prayer because we still believe in the power of prayer. Paul was asking for prayer with the hope they would unlock the prison doors.

With all our experience and testimonies, we still need prayer for us to finish strong.

James 5:16, “Pray one for another.”

God bless till next time and I cherish your prayers
